A STUDY ON THE HISTOPATHOLOGICAL CHANGE OF PLACENTA AND PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF DMPS IN THE PREGNANT RAT TREATED WITH CADMIUM

Abstract
This experiment was performed to study the effects on the placenta of cadmium, and the protective effect of 2,3-dimercaptopropane-i-sulfonate (DMPS) on the cadmium poisoning in rat treated with cadmium at various gestational period.
The experimental groups were composed of cadmium alone group, cadmium-DMPS group, and control group. Each treatment group was divided into 4 subgroups according to the gestational day.
Pregnant rats received injection ¢¥per os of 50mg, Cd/kg (as cadmium chloride dissolved in saline) once a day for two days on 4th ihd.5th dap; 8th and 9th day, 12th and 13th day, and 16th and 17th day of pregnancy.
DMPS was administered to the pregnant rats per os 500ppm DMPS solution for 3 days from the day of cadmium injection to the day after injection.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The accumulations of cadmium in the placenta of rat were increased along the gestational period. But there was no difference of cadmium accumulation in the fetuses among the subgroups.
2. Histopathological findings showed the necrosis of trophoblast, disorganization of maternal blood vessels, congestion and hemorrhage in placentas of rats. As the gestational age increased, these changes became more remarkable in cadmium alone treated group.,
3. DMPS decreased the; [accumulation of cadmium i n placenta: and the histopathological change of placenta, but_ it was not significant statistically comparing with cadmium alone treatment group.
